It’s Not Cheating if…

11 July 07

I played in the big racquetball tournament at LA Fitness yesterday and took 3rd place. My first game was a barnstormer. I won 15 to 14 and we both had multiple match point attempts before a miss-hit from my opponent set up an easy kill shot for me.

Here is my problem. When the match was 13 to 12, he won a point. It was one of our typical long rallies, and I’m pretty sure he was serving. It makes a difference, because if I was serving, I lose the serve. If he was serving, he gets the point. We discussed it briefly and he said he was pretty sure that it was just change of serve. I stopped arguing and went on to win the match.

But I don’t feel right about it.

I’m famous for calling penalties on myself (perhaps a throwback to my golfing days). If there is ever a question about a point, I’m always the first one to suggest we either play it over or I’ll concede the point without contest. I really feel like I didn’t fight this one hard enough, and the problem is that I think it’s because I wanted to win so badly.

Shouldn’t it be enough that it was a great game, win or lose?

If you weren't sure and he noted the above, then you're good to go...

I agree with tripjax. It's entirely possible that he has the same penchant for conceding a point or calling a self-pentalty that you do. Then it would have ended up as a "no you're right", "No, i think YOU'RE right" waste of time. Not to worry, bro!

I can totally appreciate your feelings on this as I'm the same way. I think it's part of my deep-seated desire to be non-confrontational ... oh, and honest.

Case in point: Last night at the movies, I gave the kid a $10 bill for my $9.25 ticket. He got out $10.75 in change and slid it back to me before I said, are you sure I didn't give you a ten dollar bill? He looked back and realized his mistake and I got my three quarters instead.

But it made me wonder how many people would have taken that money, knowing it was a mistake, but figuring it was his fault so it was okay? I can assure you, it never crossed my mind.

Also, I ordered the portable A/C online last summer from Home Depot. It actually only took a week to have it delivered once I ordered it. Of course, with this heat wave and it being the summer months still they might be backlogged. Hope you're able to find one. They are really nice ... sorry, didn't mean to rub it in. ; )

In the words of Donald Trump, "Winning isn't everything. It's the only thing."

So let me get this straight. Ryan, a poker pro, agrees that if it even smells like cheating, it's wrong. Yet, My DAD says "go for it."

What a wacky world we live in.
