Detox

I might as well come out and admit it - I'm guilty of substance abuse.

I know you all were thinking that my life was too good to be true - rich, hot wife, cool cars, big house, perfect kids. There had to be a dark side, right?

Well, there is. I've been abusing my body for years now, and it's got to change. Starting January 1st I'm going cold turkey. God help my system. It won't know how to deal with clean living.

That's right folks. I'm going on a Diet Coke hiatus for the month of January. I'm prepared for headaches and misery. Withdrawal, even. People won't recognize me without a bottle in my hand. It will be weird.

I'm also contemplating hitting the gym again. Part of me wants to be super ambitious and go for 30 workouts in 31 days. I've done it before. Heck, I may even swear off fast food for the month, too. Why not?

Who's with me?

I will be getting into shape and losing weight in 2010. But tell me, Doc -- how bad is diet soda -- really? My son keeps telling me how bad it is for the body.

I drink a lot of Pepsi. A couple of times, I've given it up for a few months. The headaches lasted about two weeks.

Good luck!

Are you just giving up caffeine or just pop? Ocean Spray makes a juice called Cranergy that's a combination of cranberry juice and green tea. All the caffeine but the goodness of fruit juice and green tea.

I've been on healthier kick for the last year. I'll be keeping it going. I will be adding swimming to the rotation. So basically, I'm in.

I've substituted a good Scotch for my Diet Pepsi needs, for years!

You'll do just fine!

Gave up cocacola about 5 years ago, haven't had one since. The physical effects weren't that bad, but the habits were close to impossible to break. Do everything you can to change the habits and you;ll beat it. Good luck!

I never drank soda (or anything carbonated for that matter) so I can't really sympathize with what you must be going through. However, I have known people who have had soda addictions and then were forced to give it up (can you say military boot camp?) and it was not pretty. Hope it's going well bro! Hang in there!

Day 2 is going great. Still no Diet Coke. Headaches controlled by Excedrin with caffeine. Had a great workout yesterday and today. Well, today would have been great, but I got a flat tire on my bike about 5 miles from the house. It probably made the workout more intense.

Bring on Sunday!
