Atlas Shrugged

I understand there's a movie coming out. I probably won't see it, but thinking about it gave me a chance to revisit Ayn Rand. What follows is a link to the "Francisco d'Anconia Money Speech." It has been called the greatest 5 pages written in the English language.

if you get a chance to see the movie, don't. By all accounts, it's shit.

You should not only see the movie (assuming it is true to the book at all), you should take your children to see it, too.

Um...who has called it the five greatest pages written in the English language? I googled it and couldn't find anything.

I'm no Objectivism expert, obviously. But it looks like a straw man to me.

I just wrote a well-reasoned response, but Blogger ate it. It was full of Objectivism, Existentialism, conformity, accusations, right-wing politics, passion, adolescence, straw-men, and Ayn Rand.

And now it's gone.

Consider yourself chastised.

nice speech but the actual scripture reference is "The LOVE of Money is the root of all KINDS of evil"

bare distinction, I know, but it takes it from an absolutist statement to one with some fairly true qualifiers

And I believe Rand deliberately misquoted the bible when she wrote, "Rearden heard Bertram Scudder, outside the group, say to a girl who made some sound of indignation, "Don't let him disturb you. You know, money is the root of all evil--and he's the typical product of money."

It's far more mis-quoted than quoted correctly, and fits this diatribe perfectly.

I've never read that, and coincidentally enough, I was just thinking the other day that I really should read it. Guess I should get on it!
